things we postpone while waiting for life to begin
on living in the future, revisiting the past, and missing the life unfolding in front of us
I think one of the saddest things we do as humans is postpone living.
We tell ourselves:
I’ll be happy when I have more. When I’m loved differently. When I heal more.
When I become more. When I finally feel enough.
As if happiness exists somewhere ahead of us.
As if our current selves are only temporary versions waiting to become worthy of experiencing life fully.
But I’ve also realized postponing life doesn’t only happen in the future. Sometimes we postpone living because we are still carrying the past.
Replaying old conversations. Old mistakes. Old versions of ourselves.
Thinking about what we should have done differently.
Who we could have been if something had happened another way.
Sometimes I wonder how much of our lives are spent somewhere else.
Not here.
In memories.
In anticipation.
In survival mode.
In trying to prepare for what’s next.
In trying to make sense of what already happened.
And while we are doing that, life keeps moving quietly beside us.
The ordinary moments.
A long hug.
A peaceful morning.
Someone who genuinely cares. Sunlight through a window.
A version of ourselves we will one day miss.
I think about this often.
How many things have I experienced without truly being there?
How many moments did I rush through because my mind was already somewhere else?
I used to think being present meant slowing down occasionally.
Now I think presence is something deeper. I think it means allowing yourself to exist without constantly trying to escape the moment you’re in.
Without needing the future to save you. Without needing the past to explain you.
Because sometimes we become so focused on becoming, fixing, healing, achieving, understanding… that we forget to experience.
And that is another form of absence. Being physically here, but emotionally somewhere else.
Existing inside your life without fully living it.
I don’t say this with judgment.
I think many of us learned to survive by staying ahead.
Preparing.
Overthinking.
Expecting.
Protecting ourselves.
I think presence feels difficult because our nervous systems learned that being fully here wasn’t always safe.
But now…
I’m learning that peace is not something we arrive at after fixing everything.
I believe peace begins in the moments we stop leaving ourselves.
When we stop living only in memories of the past.
Or rehearsing futures that haven’t happened yet.
When we notice the ordinary things while they’re still here.
A conversation.
A quiet morning.
The way someone looks at us.
A version of ourselves we’ll never be again.
I think so much of life passes unnoticed
because we’re busy revisiting what happened
or preparing for what might.
And being present is learning how to stop abandoning the moment we’re in.
Because one day, even these ordinary days will belong to the past.
And maybe life was never waiting for us somewhere else.
Maybe it has been happening quietly all along.
Asking us, again and again:
are you here?
With love,
Me.
Healing is not only about changing.
It’s also learning how to stay with yourself long enough
to experience the life that is already here.

Your words reminded me that life isn’t something we find later. It’s happening in the moments we’re living today, and I don’t want to miss them while waiting for a different tomorrow.
Insightful. There is a great saying in one of the Indian languages that we cannot wait for the ocean waters to recede to stand by the shore and still keep our feet dry. Life happens every moment. We need to just live and appreciate this life we have.
